Bible Reading
2 Peter 3:14-18Verse of the Day
“You already know these things, dear friends. So be on guard; then you will not be carried away by the errors of these wicked people and lose your own secure footing.”2 Peter 3:17 (NLT)
A guard does not wait until danger has entered before becoming alert. He watches early. He pays attention to what approaches, notices what does not belong, and protects what has been placed in his care.
Peter closes his second letter with that same kind of warning. His readers already knew the truth, but knowledge alone did not remove the need for watchfulness. False teachers were twisting Scripture, excusing sinful behavior, and spreading ideas that could pull believers away from steady faith in Christ. Peter had spent much of the letter exposing those errors, and now he tells his readers plainly: Be on guard.
This warning is not meant to make you suspicious of everyone or afraid of every new idea. It is a call to spiritual alertness. Not every message that sounds wise is biblical. Not every person who mentions God speaks faithfully about Him. Error often arrives mixed with enough truth to sound reasonable. That is why discernment requires more than a strong opinion. It requires a mind shaped by Scripture and a heart willing to obey it.
Peter says that error can cause a believer to lose secure footing. He is describing instability, like someone being pulled away from a firm position. A person rarely drifts all at once. The movement may begin with neglecting Scripture, excusing a repeated sin, following voices that weaken confidence in God’s Word, or accepting teaching without testing it. Over time, what once seemed clearly wrong can begin to feel harmless.

Reflection
Pay attention to the voices shaping your thoughts today. Choose one message, habit, or assumption and test it against Scripture. Being on guard means refusing to drift and choosing to grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus.

But Peter does not end with a warning alone. In verse 18, he gives the positive response: grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ. The best defense against spiritual drift is not constant fear. It is continued growth. The more closely you know Christ through His Word, the easier it becomes to recognise what does not reflect His character or teaching. The more deeply you receive His grace, the less attractive teachings become that either excuse sin or replace grace with human pride.
