Light and Lamp

The journey of life is new to all of us. Some of us may have lived longer and experienced more of life than others, but no one has lived life before. It is the first time for all of us. This creates a level of uncertainty about what tomorrow brings, hence the need for certainty, which is at the core of human needs. We want to be able to guarantee future outcomes in the present, and the greater the accuracy with which we can predict future events, the more stability we have in our lives.

In spite of this, I’m sure you’ve also realised that there are many factors that simply cannot be guaranteed. This means that we often go through life like someone walking through a forest in the dark. Without any form of illumination, they are bound to lose their way or, worse still, walk into danger.

The Word of God provides illumination for us on this journey. Notice that the light is for your feet, not the entire road. A critical component of following God is faith. Without faith, it is impossible to please God (Heb. 11:6). We must trust the direction God gives for step one, without knowing what step two will be. It is in the place of obedience that you receive instruction for the next step.
